The mom looks through tears at the photo of her children. It was the first photo that had ever been taken of her whole family.
For families who have experienced homelessness, money is tight and carefully budgeted, leaving little to none available for anything beyond the most essential items. So family photographs are out of the question.
That is until professional photographers Adeline Jane Peck and A.J. Greisen of A&J Photography began taking complimentary photos of families in The Road Home housing programs. “Working as a photographer, you find that sometimes subjects can be reluctant to have their photos taken. It’s refreshing to have a room full of people eager to have their photo taken,” said A.J.
These portraits symbolize family strength, love and so much more. At The Road Home, families are working tirelessly with their case managers to find housing, gain employment, attend school, and receive counseling to cope with the trauma of homelessness. All the while facing economic, educational and racial barriers. Still they move forward, often with a smile.
It can be easy to get lost in the vastness of the problem of homelessness and wonder if what we’re doing is really making a difference. But your generous support is helping more families than ever before obtain and remain in stable, safe, affordable housing. Recently released data shows that homelessness is on the decline both nationally and locally. Of the 171 families and 377 children in The Road Home housing programs last year, 90% remained in housing a year or longer.
Your gift of $50, $100 or whatever you can give to The Road Home helps us carry out our mission to provide supportive services for more children and their parents to move into not just a home, but to have a place to grow up, to stay in the same school, to be a part of a community, and to have the opportunity to reach their dreams. A place where they can proudly hang their family portrait on the wall.
The convenient option of a monthly or quarterly donation can increase the impact of your commitment. Please consider a gift today by giving online here.
Thank you for helping families move from homelessness to housing and celebrate their success with a cherished photo. We are grateful for your support!
