Housing & Hope

Housing & Hope is a unique and successful model that provides affordable rent and on-site case management services to Madison area families in 15 apartments owned by The Road Home. The apartments are located in a mixed-income neighborhood, close to schools and bus lines, and with access to a local grocery store. These affordable-housing apartments were developed and are managed by our partner, Meridian Group, Inc. An additional 15 apartments are in development.

A Housing & Hope Story

The Road Home Dane County purchased the first two apartment buildings for their Housing & Hope program in the fall of 2009.  Rehab began immediately and the first four families moved from shelter to the new apartments on November 20, 2009 – just in time for Thanksgiving.  One of those families – “Missy”, “Jerry”, and their children “Alyia” and “Tony” - doesn't think they could have found housing anywhere else.

Three-year-old Alyia was able to continue attending Head Start after the move.  She is very happy to be living so close to her best friend, whom she met in shelter, and likes riding the bus with her every day to Head Start.  Tony, age 1, continues to reach his milestones and seems much happier with the stability that his new home has provided.

Missy obtained employment while they were in shelter and has continued on the job since their move to housing.  However, Jerry, who worked a construction job, saw his hours cut dramatically once the weather got cold and less work was available.  Housing & Hope program rent is based on each family’s income with a goal of keeping rent affordable and families in housing.  When Jerry’s hours were cut, and consequently their income, their rent was reduced so the family was able to stay in their apartment.

Missy and Jerry are thrilled to have on-site case management and feel like they truly have someone who will work with them through the good times and bad to help them stabilize their lives.  They are reaching goals on a weekly basis and are so happy to have a place to call home.
